Egyptian bride fined $7,500 for virginity surgery
Caveat emptor, people. An Egyptian bride will pay her ex-husband
$7,500 — after an Abu Dhabi court determined that she had faked surgery on her
ladyparts to make him think she was a virgin. The large fine was also meant to
"help [the groom] overcome the stigma of what is considered in some parts of
Arab society to be embarrassing," though we'd rewrite that to say that this
trial would be embarrassing in pretty much all parts of all societies, for
everyone involved. The court also found that the woman had lied in the couple's
marriage contract, falsely stating she had never been previously married.
