Grateful Dead Guitarist Bob Weir Collapses Onstage in New York
•
Grateful Dead singer-guitarist Bob Weir collapsed during his performance with
Furthur at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York last night. The band,
which also includes bassist Phil Lesh, was closing out a nine show residency at
the historic venue when the 65-year-old Weir stumbled and fell to the floor
about a minute into the song “Unbroken Chain.” He was helped up by crew members and was able to complete the tune while seated in a chair before the band took a brief break. When they returned without him, Lesh told the crowd that Weir had strained his shoulder earlier in the day and would be unable to complete the set, but the music never stopped.
Furthur is scheduled to play Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Saturday and the BottleRock Napa music festival on May 9. No update on his condition was available Friday morning.
